Trauma, Extremities & Deformities
What is a Fracture
A fracture is a break in the continuity of a bone that leads to two or more fragments. In simpler terms, a fracture is a break or a split in a bone, due to more pressure than the bone can handle.
Common Causes of Fractures
Younger patients have more resilient, denser bones which bend/flex under load. Older patients' bones become weaker, demineralized with age. They fall more easily, due to a decrease in coordination, balance, eyesight and hearing.
History of Trauma
St. Vincent was ordained by the bishop of Zaragosa, St. Valerius and served as his deacon. In 304 A.D., the two were arrested, imprisoned and tortured.
Fracture Healing
Inflammatory Phase: occurs 24-72 hours after the injury. The injured tissues and platelets release enzymes, growth factors and repair tissue.
